How Created a Two Stroke Petrol Engine Model

by New Physicist on

How does a two stroke petrol engine work? Now on-wards learning the physics behind the two stroke petrol engine is very simple and easy. I have created a  model to explain the physics behind two stroke petrol engine. Like animations, models can also play an important role in teaching people the working principle effectively.

After watching the above video your experience about learning will become different to a large extent. Right? If you haven’t watched the video, watch first and then continue reading.

I have been thinking about explaining the physics behind two stroke petrol engine through an article. Then I thought rather than straightly explaining, a model can be more interesting and will make learning fun. I went on creating a model.

Never expect that this is a working kind of real engine. This is a model made of materials that are available around us, but it has almost all the essential components present in a real engine.

In this article, I am going to share my experience with making this two stroke petrol engine model video.  To effectively explain the physics I needed to make the project transparent. So I bought a piece of fiberglass and cut it into two identical sizes for the support.

These fiberglass pieces are the frame on which other components are fixed. So I had to fix a bearing at the center of both fiberglass pieces. I didn’t have a hole cutter. Instead, I used a drill to make a bearing sized hole on the fiberglass.

Crank making

Next step is making the crank. You know, the crank is the most important and tricky part of an engine. Piston-crank mechanism is what converts the linear motion of the piston into rotational motion. So I had to clearly deliver this idea and thought about it for a while. Which is the right material to make the crank? Plywood, thermocol, plastic, wood… many many different kinds of materials came into mind. Suddenly  Multiwood came into mind. One of my friends had said to me, multi-wood is very easy to cut and shape. At the same time, they are strong, water and fire resistant. Cool. It’s the right choice.

The only problem with multi-wood is “Dust”. It is harmful to your lungs. At the time of shooting the video, I was not bothered about it. After watching the video a friend of mine cautioned me about the dangers of breathing multi-wood dust. So I suggest my readers use a filter or cover your face before cutting the multi-wood with an angle grinder. Or, avoid angle grinder to cut if possible. In this case, shaping the multi-wood piece in the crank, the shape is very difficult with hack-saw.

I used multi-wood to make both the crank and connecting rod or piston rod. Now is the time to make hoes at the center of the shapes. I didn’t have a 5 mm bit drill so I went to a nearby welding shop, which is being run by my friend.

Assembling Crank

Pen lovers may hate me. I used three identical types of pen for the crankshaft. Drilling and screwing are really interesting, I love it. Do you? You may be thinking is this guy mad. No. I love to do crazy things.

Our project is almost completed. Crank and piston are the most important components of an engine. So, I can say that our project is 50 percent completed. As I already mentioned, piston, piston rod, crank, and crankshaft are the key parts which convert downward and upward motion of the piston. I used the cap of a male body perfume can as a piston.

Crankcase and cylinder are another integral part of the engine. They are stationary parts within which piston and crank moves. I used transparent plastic bottles to create crankcase and cylinder. Transparency is our primary consideration over performance.

Connecting all the components together is very easy if we have a clear idea about the output. You can see that each and every moving component inside a two stroke petrol engine is clearly visible through the fiberglass frame and plastic crankcase. Another interesting thing to note is that I have incorporated an automatic cam driven ignition plug in the project. That’s why you see the light (power stroke) when Piston reaches the top.

Thank you very much for watching the video and reading my experience. I will soon explain the physic behind two stroke petrol engine with the help of this project. It will be much interesting to read and watch. All I have to say is that, Don’t miss my videos. Subscribe to my channel “New Physicist’ on YouTube.
